Summer Travel and Road Trips: How to Keep Your Body Happy on the Journey

July is peak season for summer travel and road trips, and while vacations are meant to help us relax, long hours in the car, cramped airplane seats, and disrupted routines can leave the body feeling stiff, sore, and fatigued.

Most people spend weeks planning where they are going but give very little thought to how their body will handle the journey. Unfortunately, extended periods of sitting can place significant stress on the spine, hips, shoulders, and neck. Even healthy individuals often notice increased tension and discomfort after a day of travel.

One of the biggest contributors to travel-related aches and pains is prolonged sitting. When we sit for extended periods, muscles become less active, joints move less frequently, and circulation slows. Over time, this can lead to stiffness and reduced mobility.

Fortunately, a few simple habits can make a big difference.

If you're driving, try to stop every 60 to 90 minutes to walk and stretch. Even a few minutes of movement can help improve circulation and reduce muscle tension. When flying, take opportunities to stand, walk the aisle, or perform gentle stretches whenever possible.

Hydration is another often-overlooked factor. Travel days frequently involve extra caffeine, salty snacks, and less water than usual. Staying hydrated helps support muscles, joints, and overall energy levels.

It is also helpful to pay attention to posture. Adjust your seat so your back is supported, shoulders are relaxed, and your head stays aligned over your shoulders rather than jutting forward. Small adjustments can reduce strain over the course of a long trip.

Many people also find that scheduling a chiropractic visit before or after a vacation helps them travel more comfortably and recover more quickly when they return home.

The goal isn't to avoid travel—it is to enjoy it. By planning for your body's needs just as carefully as you plan your itinerary, you can spend less time dealing with aches and pains and more time making memories.

Whether you're heading across the country or just taking a weekend getaway, a little preparation can help keep you moving comfortably all summer long.
